21 E

Error 21 E - Defrost system issue, ice buildup

Samsung · Refrigerators

What does 21 E mean?

The control panel displays a flashing '21 E' error code. This is accompanied by ice buildup inside the Refrigerator (covering vents), a humming/buzzing noise, and eventually the unit stopping, the freezer defrosting, and the ice maker ceasing to function. This indicates a significant defrost system fault.

Common Causes

  • Defective defrost heater or thermostat
  • Faulty defrost sensor (thermistor)
  • Control board issue affecting the defrost cycle
  • Thick frost buildup stopping the evaporator fan

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Unplug the Refrigerator and manually defrost the entire unit completely for 24-48 hours with the doors open.

  2. 2

Inspect the freezer's back panel for excessive ice buildup and remove any remaining ice.

  3. 3

Ensure the evaporator fan is clear of ice and rotates freely after defrosting.

  4. 4

If the error reoccurs, a qualified technician should test the defrost heater, thermostat, and control board components.
