Ground fault

SMA · SUNNY BOY Solar Inverters

What does Ground fault mean?

A ground fault has been detected within the PV system. This can be identified by specific voltage measurements within the PV array, where the sum of positive to ground and negative to ground voltages approximately equals the total string voltage.

Common Causes

  • Insulation damage in PV modules or cabling.
  • Moisture ingress causing a path to ground.
  • Damaged cable sheathing or connections.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Disconnect the inverter from all voltage sources using the installation manual's instructions for safety.

  2. 2

Measure the voltage between the positive terminal and ground (PE).

  3. 3

Measure the voltage between the negative terminal and ground (PE).

  4. 4

Measure the voltage between the positive and negative terminals.

  5. 5

If a ground fault is confirmed by the voltage measurements, determine its location by comparing voltage ratios and rectify the fault.

  6. 6

If voltages are stable but ground fault cannot be definitively located by voltage, measure insulation resistance.
