What does Engine will not turnover or start mean?

The mower's engine is not starting or turning over when you try to start it. This can be due to several safety interlocks or system issues.

Common Causes

  • Parking brake not engaged
  • PTO switch in the ON position
  • Ground speed control levers not in NEUTRAL
  • Out of fuel
  • Engine flooded
  • Fuse blown
  • Battery terminals dirty
  • Battery discharged or dead
  • Wiring loose or broken
  • Solenoid or starter motor faulty
  • Safety interlock switch faulty
  • Spark plug faulty, fouled, or incorrectly gapped
  • Water in fuel
  • Old or stale gas

    Ensure the parking brake is engaged.

    Turn the PTO switch to the OFF position.

  3. 3

    Move the ground speed control levers to the NEUTRAL position.

    Check if the fuel tank is empty and refill if necessary. Allow a hot engine to cool first.

  5. 5

    If the engine may be flooded, move the choke control to the closed position.

  6. 6

    Check and replace the fuse if blown.
