Vibration, rocking, or “walking”

Vibration, rocking, or “walking” — Washer is unstable or unbalanced

Whirlpool · Washing Machines

What does Vibration, rocking, or “walking” mean?

The washer vibrates excessively, rocks, or 'walks' across the floor during operation, indicating it is not level or the load is unbalanced.

Common Causes

  • Washer feet are not in firm contact with the floor or are not locked.
  • Washer is not level.
  • Floor is flexing or sagging.
  • Load is unbalanced or too large.
  • Item or load is not suitable for the selected cycle.
  • The shipping bolts are still installed in the back of the washer.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Ensure all front and rear feet are in firm contact with the floor and that the washer is level. Tighten jam nuts against the bottom of the cabinet.

  2. 2

Check the floor for flexing or sagging. If uneven, place a 3/4 inch (19 mm) piece of plywood under the washer.

  3. 3

Avoid tightly packing the load. Avoid washing single items; balance them (e.g., a rug or jeans jacket) with a few extra items.

  4. 4

Verify that the shipping bolts have been removed from the back of the washer (refer to Installation Instructions).

  5. 5

Select an appropriate cycle for the items being washed (see 'Cycle Guide').
