Vibration / Rocking / Walking

Washer vibrating, rocking, or "walking" during operation

Whirlpool · Washing Machines

What does Vibration / Rocking / Walking mean?

The washer is moving excessively or vibrating strongly during its operation, which can indicate improper leveling or installation issues.

Common Causes

  • Washer feet are not in firm contact with the floor or are not locked.
  • The washer is not level on the floor.
  • The floor beneath the washer is flexing or sagging.
  • The laundry load is unbalanced or too large.
  • Shipping bolts have not been removed from the back of the washer.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Ensure all front and rear feet are in firm contact with the floor and that the washer is level; tighten jam nuts against the bottom of the cabinet.

  2. 2

Check that the shipping bolts, used for transport, have been fully removed from the back of the washer (refer to your installation instructions).

  3. 3

Avoid tightly packing the load; redistribute large or single items evenly to balance them within the drum.

  4. 4

If your floor is uneven or flexes, consider placing a 3/4 inch (19 mm) piece of plywood under the washer to reduce sound and movement.
