31-11 / 31-58

Code 31-11 (Limiting) or 31-58 (Lockout) - Compressor high pressure detected.

Carrier · Air Conditioners & Heat Pumps

What does 31-11 / 31-58 mean?

The system detects excessively high discharge pressure, leading to either compressor speed reduction (31-11) or a system shutdown and 2-hour lockout (31-58 if at minimum speed). The system attempts to self-correct by reducing compressor speed over time.

Common Causes

  • Dirty or obstructed outdoor condenser coil.
  • Insufficient airflow across the condenser.
  • Recirculation of hot air around the outdoor unit.
  • Extreme high ambient temperatures or direct sun exposure.
  • Blockage in the refrigerant circuit or faulty EXV/TXV.
  • Overcharge of refrigerant in the system.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Inspect and clean the outdoor condenser coil if it appears dirty or clogged with debris.

  2. 2

Ensure there are no obstructions (plants, fences, stored items) blocking airflow around the outdoor unit.

  3. 3

Verify that the unit is not exposed to extreme direct sunlight or excessive heat that could be causing high pressures.

  4. 4

For persistent faults or suspected internal issues like refrigerant problems, contact a qualified HVAC technician for diagnosis and repair.
