Code 36-15 Compressor Low Compress Shutdown — Low compression ratio detected, system shut down

Carrier · Air Conditioners & Heat Pumps

What does 36-15 mean?

The system has detected a low compression ratio that cannot be adjusted by Automatic Envelope Management (AEM), causing a shutdown. Before this fault, AEM attempts to increase compression ratio by reducing outdoor fan speed (cooling only) and then increasing compressor speed. Repeated occurrences can lead to a lockout.

Common Causes

  • Compressor not increasing pressure adequately.
  • Low system refrigerant charge.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Allow the system to attempt self-correction through AEM (reducing fan speed, increasing compressor speed).

  2. 2

If the problem persists or recurs, contact a qualified technician.

  3. 3

Have a technician check the compressor's ability to increase pressure and the system's refrigerant charge.
