54-02

Code 54-02 ODT Shorted - Discharge Thermistor is shorted, system runs at startup speed.

Carrier · Air Conditioners & Heat Pumps

What does 54-02 mean?

The discharge thermistor (ODT) is detected as 'shorted' (resistance below 670 ohm). Similar to 'ODT Open,' the system will only run at startup speed, and '47' may be substituted for its value. Normal operation will resume once a valid ODT value is read by the PCM.

Common Causes

  • Short circuit in the discharge thermistor wiring.
  • Short circuit at the thermistor connector.
  • Faulty discharge thermistor sensor.
  • Faulty PCM if thermistor resistance measures within range.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Measure the resistance value of the discharge thermistor at the PCM connector.

  2. 2

If the measured value is below 670 ohm, inspect the thermistor wiring and its connector for any short circuits.

  3. 3

If no shorts are visually observed, replace the discharge thermistor sensor.

  4. 4

If the measured resistance is within the allowable range, the PCM (Processor Control Module) may be faulty and require replacement by a qualified technician.
