Error 88 — Inverter Temp Lockout

Carrier · Heat Pumps

What does 88 mean?

The system has entered a lockout state because the inverter temperature limits were exceeded multiple times (Error 75). This can be due to blocked heat exchangers, low airflow, or operation outside normal ranges.

Common Causes

  • Blocked Inverter Heat Exchanger (fins)
  • Outdoor Airflow too low or off
  • Outside Normal Operating Range (e.g., outside cooling ambient temperature range)
  • Inverter internal damage

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Check the inverter fins for any debris and clean them if necessary.

  2. 2

Inspect the condenser (IDU in heating, ODU in cooling) for clogging (ice or debris) and clean it. Ensure the condenser fan motor is working.

  3. 3

If the problem persists, contact a qualified technician, as the inverter may have internal damage and require replacement.
