VRM data mismatch with billing

VRM data mismatch with billing — Differences in energy accounting methods

SolarEdge · ESS Systems

What does VRM data mismatch with billing mean?

There can be a discrepancy between the energy data shown on the VRM Portal and your utility bill. This is common in systems without a dedicated energy meter (like EM24) or those using an ET340 meter, due to different ways of calculating imported and exported energy.

Common Causes

  • VRM calculates energy per phase, while utility meters often use total net energy.
  • ESS regulation set to 'Total of all phases' exacerbates the difference.
  • Simultaneous import and export readings can increase counters on VRM.
  • Use of PV-inverters can also contribute to discrepancies.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

For accurate billing comparisons, consider using an EM24 meter, which accumulates total net energy.

  2. 2

If using an ET340 or no meter, understand that VRM data may show more simultaneous import/export than your utility meter registers.

  3. 3

Adjust the ESS regulation setting in VEConfigure from 'Total of all phases' to 'Individual phase' if you want to see individual phase readings, though total net energy calculation differences may still exist.

  4. 4

Consult your utility provider about their specific energy accounting methods.
