Long drying times / Clothes not dry

Long drying times or clothes not dry — Clothes remain damp after cycle

Whirlpool · Smart Electronic Dryers

What does Long drying times / Clothes not dry mean?

The dryer takes an unusually long time to dry clothes, or items remain damp even after a full cycle. This often indicates restricted airflow, improper installation, or incorrect settings.

Common Causes

  • The lint screen or the lint screen housing is clogged with lint.
  • The exhaust vent or outside exhaust hood is clogged with lint, restricting air movement.
  • The exhaust vent is not the correct length (too long) or has too many turns.
  • The exhaust vent diameter is not the correct 4 inch (102 mm) size.
  • The dryer is not level, preventing clothes from properly contacting moisture sensors during Automatic cycles.
  • The 'No Heat' temperature setting has been selected for the cycle.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Clean the lint screen before each load and gently vacuum any lint accumulated in the lint screen housing.

  2. 2

Check the outside exhaust hood for proper air movement by running the dryer for 5-10 minutes and holding your hand underneath; if no air movement, clean the entire exhaust system.

  3. 3

Verify the exhaust vent length and number of turns against the Installation Instructions to ensure proper airflow.

  4. 4

Confirm that the exhaust vent material is the correct 4 inch (102 mm) diameter.

  5. 5

Refer to the 'Level Dryer' section in the Installation Instructions to ensure the dryer is properly leveled.

  6. 6

Select an appropriate temperature setting for the garments being dried, avoiding the 'No Heat' option.
